Introductory course in teaching and learning in higher education

Do you teach at UiT? Would you like to develop your teaching skills?

This course is intended for PhD students, postdoctoral researchers and staff working at UiT. It will provide an opportunity to develop and/or improve your teaching skills, and to meet people in a similar situation to yourself.

From September 2026, you will be able to count the 30 hours of this course towards the Foundational Course in University Pedagogy in the future.

Admission requirements

To participate in the course, you must be one of the following:

PhD student at UiT

With or without teaching responsibilities

Employee at UiT

Academic or administrative, with or without teaching responsibilities

Postdoc at UiT

With or without teaching responsibilities

You just need to have an interest in teaching and learning!

Requirements for completion

We estimate that the course will take about 30 hours to complete. To have your participation in the programme approved, certain requirements must be met:

Attend the kick-off meeting

(1 hour)

Prepare for your microteaching session

(3-6 hours)

Participate in 1 microteaching session

(3 hours)

Attend the two lectures

(6 hours)

Go through the Canvas modules and complete the quizzes

(14 hours)

For hybrid sessions, you are expected to attend in-person if you are based in Campus Tromsø. Those based in other campuses can choose to attend in-person or digitally. Please let us know when you sign up.

Language

The course can be completed in either English or Norwegian. Some participants choose to follow the course in the language they plan to teach in, while others prefer to work in the language they feel most comfortable using.
All Canvas modules and quizzes are available in both languages, and the kick-off session will also be conducted bilingually. Lectures and seminars will be delivered in English, with Norwegian subtitles provided for the lectures, while group work for the seminar sections can be carried out in either English or Norwegian. Microteaching sessions will be organised into both English- and Norwegian-speaking groups.
