About

Imagine that you are 11 years old and you learn that your mother is seriously ill and may die. This was the reality for Hani, a young man who experienced the unthinkable: losing his own mother to cancer at a young age. How to live with the grief?

In this series, we meet Hani through three episodes, where he talks about his experiences during the period when his mother fell ill, the time she was about to die, and how losing at a young age has affected him.

Director Biography

Pedagogical value

The films, integral to an online course designed for healthcare professionals and others working with children and adolescents, provide first-hand experiences. Their purpose is to foster a deeper understanding of a child’s perspective when dealing with serious illnesses, crises, and death in close family. These films form a comprehensive teaching plan, with the narrative serving as a consistent thread throughout the course. Participants watch the films independently and then engage in group discussions on how to best support a child in a similar situation, asking, “What actions would you take to assist, and why?”

The educational package comprises six films in total. Three of these films narrate different phases of the story (Film 1: When Mum Became Ill, Film 2: When Mum Died, and Film 3: Hereafter). The remaining three films are interview-based and serve as a sort of “epilogue” shown after the group discussion.

In these films, Hani, who is the protagonist, articulates his experiences, highlighting the effective aspects and suggesting improvements for his encounters with the healthcare system and school during these challenging phases.
