Ocean Portrait –

The children by the North Sea

Ocean Portrait - The children by the North Sea a film selected for Tromsø Educational Film Festival 2024 (TREFF).

About

This documentary is about a research and art project carried out in kindergartens in Øygarden municipality in 2022, near Bergen. In a joint project, we staged joint exploration of life in the biotope between land and sea with the aim of an aesthetic look at the sea and a glocal mindset and value set. The children had sensory, poetic, artistic, geographical and natural science experiences. The researchers studied the children’s nascent understanding and experiences of the local coastal landscape and the biological diversity at the site.

This film will be used in Kindergarten teacher education in arts and sustainability education and in professional development courses. We will use flipped classroom methodology and prepare questions for group dialogues for them to discover the teacher’s style, how children participate and explore nature, how they use their own imagination and experience, and how the project opens for learning through the senses. The project is part of the One Ocean – Exploration project. This a project that connects to the UN decade of One Ocean. It started out a partaking in a Climate research project through the tall-ship Statsraad Lehmkuhl circumnavigation. Norway funds regional professional development programs in all regions in Norway (REKOMP) and we add to new possibilities of inspiring kindergartens to explore with children, and through that raise the quality of kindergarten practices.
