About

Deep within the Peruvian Andes, the Cordillera Blanca is home to one quarter of the world’s tropical glaciers. Glacial meltwaters in this region help to sustain a valley inhabited by more than 200,000 people. However, these high-altitude glaciers are also especially sensitive to climate change. This film explores how their retreat may be driving dramatic changes in water quality, drawing on recent research from the CASCADA project.

Pedagogical value

My YouTube channel uses storytelling to facilitate science communication. Stories are humanity’s oldest teaching tool: they let us learn from others’ experiences, and they remain powerful because they engage emotion, imagination, and memory. Neuroscience shows that emotionally salient experiences are encoded more deeply in long-term memory, which translates to improved comprehension and recall. Story-based teaching delivery also improves attention, provides scaffolding for learners and reduces cognitive fatigue. To enhance learning outcomes, I use a methodical approach to video creation. I begin with a clear learning objective: to understand an abstract or complex idea, such as the role of feedback loops in the climate system. I then find a concrete story that illustrates the concept and pick out secondary objectives — like the ability to describe a specific, tangible process — which form the backbone of the script. The narrative is then structured with “but” and “therefore” story beats to vary emotional tone and sustain engagement. Humour, analogy, and visuals are also central to the success of this framework. Humour allows learners to connect with me as a presenter, while analogies and visual aids support different learning styles and broaden accessibility. This format has huge pedagogical potential. Short, re-watchable videos work well in flipped classrooms, as they are easy to watch asynchronously and provide points for face-to-face discussion; they are also compatible with interactive tools such as H5P. Moreover, they are accessible to learners outside of educational institutions — and even to researchers, as I found when a geologist contacted me to discuss how one of my videos related to his own work. In short, humans are a storytelling species. By reconciling scientific explanation with an approachable social media style, I aim to foster trust in science and help learners see it not as distant theory but as something tangible, connected to their own world.

Dna break repair by homologous recombination (au)

Homologous recombination is crucial in repairing double-strand breaks in DNA, correcting errors, and maintaining genomic integrity. This animation highlights the role of BRCA1 and BRCA2 in DNA break repair in homologous recombination. Designed to support outreach on WEHI research into breast cancer and provide world-class education materials on foundational cell biology topics.

Things that keep me up at night (se)
Things that keep me up at night (se)

Thirteen young people from six different countries share the innermost thoughts that keep them up through the night. Videos of baby elephants, the fear of dying, of girls, and of losing someone you love. Things we rarely talk about, but often have in common.

Southern sami identity (no)
Southern sami identity (no)

Identity is shaped by, among other things, a shared language, culture, and history. This short documentary offers insight into how two Southern Sami sisters perceive their identity, what they take pride in and the challenges they navigate. It is a story of how belonging to a minority can be both empowering and demanding. It comes with certain expectations – from the Southern Sami community, from Norwegian society, and from the sisters themselves.
