In our society, there are many important ethical questions that people disagree on—for example, whether we should legalize various forms of assisted dying, where the limit for elective abortion should be drawn, and how we ought to treat animals. Many ethical questions are complex, and require knowledge and background information. It can also be challenging to navigate the diversity of opinions that exists in ethical debates, so that one can be an informed participant in such discussions. In this series, we will produce videos about some of the most important ethical dilemmas of our time. The videos aim to make us wiser and better equipped to engage in informed discussions about important ethical issues. This is a dissemination project with a very broad reach. The primary audience is students in schools and universities, but all socially engaged citizens may benefit from the videos.

Pedagogical value

The rise of artificial intelligence presents particularly significant challenges for teaching and assessing students at Norwegian institutions of higher education. In addition, we are seeing that today’s generation of students—who have grown up with screens—are less able than previous generations to read longer texts, and to focus their attention on academic work and teaching. They often seek digital alternatives to articles and books. The starting point for this project is the need to find new ways of teaching and new methods for assessing students’ skills. During the pandemic, we observed that students appreciated digital learning tools in their education. After the pandemic, it has been challenging to return to physical teaching with traditional tools and methods. In this project, we will create a series of videos about several contemporary ethical dilemmas. These are intended to supplement the curriculum and be part of the teaching of a course in ethics at both the graduate and undergraduate level. The idea is that students watch the videos before class, and then we design a setup with questions for discussion in the lectures or seminars that follow. The hypothesis is that students will be more motivated for teaching when, in addition to the curriculum, they can watch videos that effectively and thoroughly introduce them to the ethical issues addressed in the course. Eventually, we will also produce podcast versions of all the videos, so that students have the option to listen without watching. The aim is to publish the video series, with accompanying podcasts, on www.vitentv.no as well as on the university’s YouTube and Vimeo channels. Here we will produce different learning activities connected with the videoes, such as study questions and links to other study material that can engage the students.

Director Biography

Frode Ims is employed at the University of Bergen, where he works as a video producer. He creates visual content that supports teaching and the dissemination of knowledge. Through his work, he seeks to make academic concepts more accessible and engaging for both students and the public. Espen Gamlund is a professor of philosophy at the University of Bergen. He works on various issues within ethics and moral philosophy, and spends much of his time communicating philosophy to the general public.

This short documentary offers insight into how two Southern Sami sisters perceive their identity, what they take pride in and the challenges they navigate. It is a story of how belonging to a minority can be both empowering and demanding. It comes with certain expectations – from the Southern Sami community, from Norwegian society, and from the sisters themselves.
