«Architecture is the act of enclosing and servicing an interior atmosphere.». -David Boswell Reid Throughout my filmmaking life, ventilation sound has been a constant nuisance. I have argued with janitors to turn it off, moved shooting sessions to avoid it and sat in the cutting room for long hours to edit it out. Then a conference about ventilation sound comes along and I am invited to make a film contribution. It turns everything around. Ventilation suddenly gets a starring role! I go back into my archives from 10 years of recordings as a video producer at the University of Oslo and let ventilation speak with its own voice. Through recordings from conferences, fieldwork and case videos, we get to know the ubiquitous ventilation better. It turns out to have a unique and mysterious story to tell. Air ventilation is an integral part of all building design. For most people, including architects, it is a necessary element that is not given much aesthetic reflection. This film will give you a new perspective on this seemingly dull element of our building interiors.Specifications
Director Biography
Audun Bjerknes has worked 20 years in the Norwegian Film and Television industry, as a film editor, photographer, writer and director. He has a diploma in documentary film direction from the Lillehammer College and a master in Educational philosophy at the University of OsloPedagogical value

Scott, ethnographer and Lecturer in Ethnomusicology at the University of Central Florida in Orlando, says about the film: «The film would work easily for courses in sound studies and related, interdisciplinary fields. It’s a good introduction to the topic of how air and the sounds of air permeate and shape our worlds. There are also interesting questions about how «noise» is defined, and who gets to define it. I’d possibly pair it with materials about sound (or the lack of sound) in outer space — maybe an interesting idea for a future film! So that’s to say, the film would be used as something to start discussion in these kinds of courses.Info

It is a story of how belonging to a minority can be both empowering and demanding. It comes with certain expectations – from the Southern Sami community, from Norwegian society, and from the sisters themselves.
