Frequently Asked Questions
Are there any pedagogical requirements when applying for a position at UiT?
All academic employees at UiT are required to have a minimum of pedagogical qualifications (equivalent to basic pedagogical competence). The criteria are the same for all academic positions.
How do I document my pedagogical competence?
At UiT this is documented through a teaching portfolio. In 2008 UiT passed a resolution to adopt teaching portfolios as the basis for approval of pedagogical competence for research and teaching positions.
What are the criteria for basic pedagogical competence?
The criteria may be found in section 4.5 in “Utfyllende bestemmelser for ansettelse og opprykk ved UiT”. UiT requires all applicants for academic positions and tenure to document their pedagogical competence by submitting a teaching portfolio. If approved by the hiring or tenure committee, you have fulfilled the criteria for basic pedagogical competence.
What if I do not fulfil the criteria?
Where do I go for help and support with developing my teaching portfolio?
For help and support with developing my teaching portfolio, see the online resources here.
It is also a good idea to seek advice and support within your own academic community from individuals who have had their teaching portfolio approved.
If you have five or more years of teaching experience, you can apply for a place on the teaching portfolio seminar series.
Finally, for help and support we would advise you to collaborate with peers who are also in the process of developing a teaching portfolio.
Which appointment grades are eligible for educational promotion?
In order to apply for educational promotion you must be employed as: professor, docent, or associate professor (førsteamanuensis or førstelektor). Pedagogical competence and merits should be relevant to the individual applicant’s appointment grade, both in terms of teaching and contributions to development and innovation.
