AKMA 2.
Ocean Senses Research Expedition
About
May 2022. Longyearbyen. While the engineers are still working hard to mobilize all the instruments needed for the expedition, the AKMA team is planning and discussing how the samples will be taken; the different groups will work together and ask if they will see polar bears. Then, the RV Kronprins Haakon is ready to set sail north.
An interdisciplinary team of brave researchers is ready to operate on the icebreaker’s deck like a swarm. They have an ambitious plan: bringing science, education, and love for the Ocean together.
The short documentary tells how this astonishing team has gathered scientific data and developed new learning tools to enable learners of different ages to experience the ocean using all their primary senses: touch, sight, smell, hearing, and taste.
About the Expedition
The film has been realized during the CAGE22-1 AKMA-OceanSenses Research Expedition (11-23 May 2022), led by Professor Giuliana Panieri and Professor Stefan Buenz (UiT) aboard the r/v Kronprins Haakon to the Barents Sea and the Arctic Ocean. The expedition received endorsement from the UN Ocean Decade.
The AKMA project is funded by the Norwegian Research Council, n. 287869 – Advancing Knowledge on Methane in the Arctic (AKMA): Norway-USA Collaboration

Giuliana Panieri is a Professor in Geology at the Department of Geosciences at UiT. She is mainly interested in using micropaleontology and geochemistry to study extreme environments (cold seeps, gas hydrate, and hydrothermal vents), and paleoenvironmental reconstructions.
Pedagogical value
Through stunning visuals and scientific insights, the documentary captures the essence of exploration, discovery, education, and the relentless pursuit of understanding that defines the scientific expedition. From this perspective, the film could help to convey what goes into Arctic research and understand how the research is done. It also provides the human element of research, which can help students connect to the Ocean and the complexity of the knowledge related to it.
