Samer har status som urfolk i Norge, likeledes som nordamerikanske urfolksgrupper i USA eller Maori i Aotearoa (New Zealand). Begrepet urfolk har ikke \u00e9n universal definisjon, men heller flere ulike som er blitt til gjennom internasjonal diskusjon, bruk og Hva du kaller et annet menneske, betyr noe. Hvordan vi kategoriserer folk, betyr noe.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>I en urfolkssammenheng er dette spesielt viktig. Her i Norge bruker vi betegnelsen \u00absamer\u00bb. Dette er det ordet eller den benevnelsen som samene sj\u00f8l ogs\u00e5 foretrekker. Det betyr at ord som \u00ablapp\u00bb eller \u00abfjellfinn\u00bb, som f\u00f8r ble brukt av mange, i dag er uakseptable og kan oppleves som spottende. Grunnen er at de ogs\u00e5 tidligere blei brukt nedsettende, som skjellsord.<\/p>\n<p>I andre deler av verden finnes tilsvarende diskusjoner. Ordet \u00abindianer\u00bb er et eksempel. Ordet er utledet av misforst\u00e5elsen \u00aboppdageren\u00bb (skj\u00f8nner du hvorfor oppdageren m\u00e5 settes i hermetegn?) Christoffer Colombus gjorde da han trodde han var kommet til India og kalte innbyggerne indianere. I dag er det flere urfolksgrupper som ikke vil bruke betegnelsen indianer om seg sj\u00f8l. Da b\u00f8r vi her p\u00e5 andre sida av Atlanteren heller ikke gj\u00f8re det. Samtidig er det b\u00e5de grupper og organisasjoner som omtaler seg sj\u00f8l som \u00abIndians\u00bb. Det sikre er alts\u00e5 \u00e5 si \u00abnordamerikanske urfolksgrupper\u00bb.<\/p>\n<p>Drar vi over Stillehavet til Australia, er det ogs\u00e5 der komplisert \u00e5 finne de rette ordene. Offisielt brukes \u00abAboriginals and Torres Strait Islanders\u00bb om den samlede gruppa av urfolk. Sametingspresident Aili Keskitalo kalte det \u00absmakl\u00f8st\u00bb og p\u00e5pekte at urfolks kl\u00e6r og kulturelle symboler&#8230;<\/p>\n<\/div><a
